Rearming the Traitors Battery in Antwerp’s Fort 2

In the 19th Century Antwerp was heavily fortified as the Belgian national redoubt. Fort No 2 at Wommelgem is one of the eight forts of what would later be termed the ‘inner ring’ designed by Henri-Alexis Brialmont and built between 1859 and 1865. A key feature at the rear of the fort is a ‘keep’ or inner fort, the outer face of which overlooks Antwerp. The keep is separated from the rest of the fort by a dry moat and a counterscarp.

To protect the fort from an attack from the rear the keep has a gun gallery facing towards the city. This Traditore or ‘traitors’ battery is on the second floor of the keep in a magnificent brick vaulted, brick floored, semi-circular gallery with seven gun recesses. Until recently it had been subdivided into smaller spaces for a Police museum. A sloping passageway leads from this space up to further gun platforms on the roof.

This grant to the ‘Working Group of Fort 2 Guides’ will allow them to replicate two of the smooth bore guns and mountings in the original recesses so that the public can better understand the role of this interesting battery. The group will also be installing lighting (separately funded) to help create an appropriate atmosphere.

The Traditore Battery will become a multi-functional space for hosting large groups, for temporary exhibitions on aspect of the forts history including the Royal Naval Division in WW1 and a Canadian Field Hospital in WW2 as well as the reconstruction featuring the guns funded by FSG.

When entering from the staircase the curve of the room and the new replica guns will create a real ‘wow factor’ for our visitors.”

During the October 2025 visit FSG presented a plaque to recognise the excellent work by the guides group, the volunteers of the non-profit organisation vzw Fortvrienden, and the Wommelgem commune to conserve and present the fort to the public. Het herbewapenen van de Tradetorebatterij in Fort 2 van Antwerpen

In de 19e eeuw was Antwerpen zwaar versterkt als Belgisch nationaal bolwerk. Fort nummer 2 bij Wommelgem is een van de acht forten van wat later de 'binnenring' zou worden genoemd, ontworpen door Henri-Alexis Brialmont en gebouwd tussen 1859 en 1865. Een opvallend kenmerk aan de achterzijde van het fort is een reduit, waarvan de buitenkant uitkijkt over Antwerpen. De donjon wordt van de rest van het fort gescheiden door een droge gracht en een tegenmuur.

Om het fort te beschermen tegen een aanval vanuit de achterzijde, heeft de donjon een geschutsgalerij die op de stad is gericht. Deze 'Traditorebatterij' bevindt zich op de tweede verdieping van de donjon in een magnifieke, halfronde galerij met een bakstenen gewelf en vloer, met zeven geschutsnissen. Tot voor kort was deze ruimte opgedeeld in kleinere ruimtes voor een politiemuseum. Een schuine doorgang leidt vanuit deze ruimte naar verdere geschutsplatformen op het dak.

Deze subsidie aan de ‘Werkgroep Gidsen Fort 2’ stelt hen in staat om twee van de glad geschut en de bijbehorende affuiten na te bouwen in de originele nissen, zodat het publiek de rol van deze interessante batterij beter kan begrijpen. De groep zal ook verlichting installeren (apart gefinancierd) om een passende sfeer te creëren.

De Traditore-batterij zal een multifunctionele ruimte worden voor grote groepen, tijdelijke tentoonstellingen over verschillende aspecten van de geschiedenis van het fort, waaronder de Royal Naval Division in de Eerste Wereldoorlog en een Canadees veldhospitaal in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, evenals de reconstructie van de kanonnen, gefinancierd door de Fortress Study Group (FSG).

Deze subsidie geeft een vliegende start aan onze plannen om de Traditore-batterij te transformeren tot een multifunctionele ruimte voor onze bezoekers. Bij binnenkomst via de trap zullen de gebogen vorm van de ruimte en de nieuwe replica-kanonnen een echt ‘wow-effect’ creëren voor onze bezoekers.”

David Clarke, voorzitter van de Fortress Study Group, zei: "Toen we Fort 2 afgelopen oktober bezochten tijdens onze rondreis door België, zagen we met eigen ogen hoe adembenemend mooi de Traditore-batterij is en konden we ons goed voorstellen hoe we de toen nog lege galerij beter konden benutten. We zijn dan ook zeer verheugd de gidsen van Fort 2 te kunnen ondersteunen in hun ambitie om van deze prachtige bakstenen galerij een belangrijk onderdeel te maken van toekomstige bezoeken aan het fort".

Tijdens het bezoek in oktober 2025 overhandigde de FSG een plaquette als erkenning voor het uitstekende werk van de gidsengroep, de vrijwilligers van de vzw Fortvrienden, en de gemeente Wommelgem om het fort te behouden en aan het publiek te presenteren.
